Sterling, Ky, October 28 - A sensation has been brewing in this county for several days over the desertion of a baby by a man said to be from Menifee county. One day last week, this man brought the child here and spent some hours in the negro settlement trying to get some colored family to take the child and keep it a few days, saying that he would return for it.
He did not do so, and several ladies and men heard of the fact that a white baby was living with a colored family and an investigation was made, when it was found to be true. The child, a boy about five weeks old, was located at the home of a negro family named Yates and was found to be without clothing and the necessaries of life. The women became interested in the matter, furnished clothing and persuaded Policeman Tipton and County Attorney E. Seriff to become interested in the case.
The officers began a search for the man and after locating the child found enough evidence to warrant the issuance of a warrant. This was done by County Judge McCormick, and the child was taken in charge by the County Judge until the trail is held. The warrant was sworn out for George Buchanan, of Menifee county, charging him with "willful desertion of an infant child," and officers have gone to arrest him.
The offense is a felony. The child is a bright and healthy youngster. It is said that Buchanan is a prominent and well-to-do citizen of Menifee county. Buchanan, of the Frenchburg Agitator, was brought before County Judge McCormick here, charged with willful desertion of an infant child, waived examination and was held to await the action of the Montgomery County grand jury.
The child, left with a negro family, was turned over to its mother, who came before the County Judge, made an earnest plea and returned with it to her home in Menifee County. All witnesses were recognized to appear before the grand jury in January.
